wallace stevens

haiku

in dawn we
spare like sole footfall
malachite--

mica flakes
gold black and carmine
in the valves

banked stone, rock
veined with gold and gray
tensed, like waves.

there was a
shore. she sang a song.

(anguish of
pink in the water.
dripping sun

on waves of
rock and silver, gold,
malachite.)
